The Permethrin Spreadsheet was developed in response to the increasing use of permethrin in municipal areas for the purpose of mosquito abatement. Permethrin, a pyrethroid insecticide, is thought to be less harmful than other mosquito abatement products because of its relative lack of acute or immediate effects. It is commonly used in household insect foggers and sprays, flea dips and sprays for cats and dogs, ornamental garden and turf products, repellent/insecticide for clothing, mosquito abatement products, termite treatments, agricultural products, lice shampoos, body lotions for scabies control, and aircraft cabin insect control.
In an effort to gather information on the potential impact of permethrin on human health, we conducted an extensive search of the scientific literature published in academic journals, analyzed the studies and categorized them in an Excel spreadsheet. From this, we wrote a technical Summary and a Citizen's Guide in reader-friendly terms (see the menu bar to the right).
